The Orpheum Theatre Minneapolis first opened its doors to the public in 1921, when it was known as the Hennepin. What started out as what was widely perceived to be amongst the biggest vaudeville houses in the U.S at the time, the Orpheum Theatre made the transition to cinema sometime in the 1930s, and gained national attention for its success as such. The Orpheum Theatre schedule was not just limited to movies however; big bands and touring theatre groups were also welcome additions.
Nowadays, the Opheum Theatre Minneapolis is perhaps best known for its Broadway spectaculars. The venue underwent a major restoration project in 1993 which saw the Minneapolis venue's stage being extended by 20 feet – giving it the increase in size needed to accommodate shows as large as the Broadway spectacles it hoped to, and subsequently did attract. Disney’s The Lion King, AIDA and Miss Saigon are just some of the shows which have made their way onto the Orpheum Theatre schedule since the $10 million revamp.
