The Lion King
While Disney has produced a number of popular musicals -- including Beauty and the Beast, Mary Poppins, and The Little Mermaid -- none have been more successful and innovative than The Lion King. Music by Elton John, a score by Hans Zimmer, and an array of groundbreaking puppet have won The Lion King six Tony Awards and made it the eighth longest-running show in Broadway history. There is also a tour in the US which has been running for quite some time and has sold-out tickets all across the country. No matter what language or venue The Lion King is seen in, it's bound to bring people the same sense of joy and wonder that it has brought millions of others.
The Lion King premiered on Broadway at the New Amsterdam Theater in November of 1997 to the delight of audiences and critics. While it moved to the Minskoff Theatre in 2006, it hasn't affected the musical's popularity or ticket sales. The success of The Lion King led to a production at the Lyceum Theatre in London, which is still running today. Tours of the hit musical soon followed with massive ticket sales. In March of 2011, a production came to Singapore that is still running, and plans to bring the musical to Russia have been announced, though there has been no news as to where it will play.
The story of The Lion King begins with the birth of Simba, a lion cub destined to succeed his father, King Mufasa, as the ruler of the Pride Lands. He flees his home after his conniving uncle, Scar, kills Mufasa (unbeknownst to Simba) and convinces Simba that it was his fault. Shamed, he wanders into the dessert until he meets Timon and Pumba, a meerkat and warthog with a relaxed attitude towards life. After years of living with the pair, he encounters a matured, Nala, his best friend from childhood. She informs him of the pride's decay under the leadership of Scar and his news of Simba's death, begging Simba to return to the Pride Land to restore order. Simba confronts Scar, but wonders if he really has what it takes to defeat the lion that killed his father and claim his place in the Circle of Life.
Tickets are being sold for ongoing US performances at the Minskoff Theatre on Broadway and Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. Internationally, The Lion King is performing at the Lyceum Theatre in the West End of London and Teatro Lope De Vega in Madrid. In Hamburg, the musical is playing at the Stage Theater, in Tokyo it is playing at Theatre Haru, and the Marina Bay Sands Theatre in Singapore. Tickets are also available for the US tour, which is scheduled to visit major American cities until September of 2012. Don't miss an opportunity to purchase tickets for The Lion King before it leaves stages for good.
